Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is a hereditary disease caused by deficient frataxin expression. This mitochondrial protein has been related to iron homeostasis, energy metabolism, and oxidative stress. Patients with FRDA experience neurologic alterations and cardiomyopathy, which is the leading cause of death.
